U.S. Open Day Four Recap: Sinner Rolls Into Third Round

Looking to bookend his 2024 season with major titles, Italy’s Jannik Sinner moved one step closer to that goal with a convincing second-round victory on Thursday. The top-seeded Sinner needed just one hour and 39 minutes to defeat American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.
“I am very happy to get through, he is a very tough opponent,” said Sinner. “We had a match in Cincinnati one week ago, so I knew a little what to expect.”
The victory was Sinner’s 50th of the season as he continues to have the best year of his young career. The Australian Open champion, Sinner has his sights set on claiming the U.S. Open trophy as well. He reached the quarterfinals here in 2022 when he lost an epic five-set thriller to Carlos Alcaraz.
“I always love New York, the first Grand Slam I played in the main draw, so I have great memories and I always enjoy playing here,” he said.
Up next for Sinner is Australian Christopher O’Connell, who ousted Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Fifth-seed Daniil Medvedev made his way into the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 7-6(5) over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan.
“It was a tough match,” said Medvedev. “Actually first time we play, and I knew that he can attack well. He’s strong.”
Medvedev fired 34 winners to 25 unforced errors to advance in straight sets. He draws Italy’s Flavio Cobolli next.
