In the first installment of the revamped U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Championships, the Italian pair of Sara Errani & Andrea Vavassori won their second consecutive title in Queens, defeating third-seed Iga Swiatek & Casper Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in the championship match inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night.

“We are doing something in these two years [together] that’s amazing. I have to say thank you for your energy on the court. It’s like family to play with you,” Vavassori said.

Errani & Vavassori were winners of last year’s U.S. Open Mixed Doubles title, but this year have earned a significantly higher purse. The new edition of the event included a $1 million prize.

“I’m enjoying so much playing with you. It’s a pleasure for me to be by your side,” said Errani. “It’s always so special. We’re sharing these moments that are unforgettable, so I’m really happy to share them with you.”

Both the semifinals and finals were played on Wednesday. First, Errani & Vavassori knocked off Americans Danielle Collins & Christian Harrison, while Swiatek & Ruud beat Jessica Pegula & Jack Draper in their semifinals.

After splitting the first two sets in the final, the trophy and prize money would be decided by a 10-point tiebreak. The Italians won the first four points of the tiebreak, only to see Ruud & Swiatek rattle off four of the next five points.

Despite the attempted comeback from their opponents, Errani & Vavassori would not relinquish the lead, and a few points later, sealed the victory.

“I think tonight was amazing. The atmosphere was crazy. The last match was unbelievable. I think [there were] so many good points, so many highlights,” said Vavassori. “I think these two days will be really important for doubles in the future because we show that doubles player are great players. I think this product can grow in the future. There were so many legends in the past that played doubles.

I was speaking with John McEnroe in the locker room. He said to me…’You’re doing something good for doubles’. So I think it will be really important in the future to know that it’s a product that can grow.”
