Ross School’s Dangin & Weiss Win Suffolk Doubles Championship

One of the biggest keys to the success of any team is trust and camaraderie between its members. For Ross School’s Lola Dangin & Lillie Weiss, being close to one another off the court has translated to success on the court.
That was on display in the Section XI Doubles Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Smithtown East High School, as the pairing captured the title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over William Floyd’s Anabel Van Cott & Lydia Van Cott.

“Having a partner like Lola, who I am friends with on and off the court, makes playing so much more enjoyable,” said Weiss. “We’re very proud of ourselves, we worked really hard to be here, and being county champions makes all the effort we put in worth it.”
With Dangin playing effectively from the baseline, and Weiss showing off her aggressiveness at the net, the pairing created a well-balanced doubles team that prevented the Van Cotts from getting into any rhythm.
“Lillie is a really good poacher, so I just try to push the ball as deep as I can during the rallies so I can set her up as best as I can,” Dangin added.

Both players now look forward to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Individual Championships from Monday, October 27 – Wednesday, October 29 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. They have each been to this tournament before, Dangin as a singles player two years ago, and Weiss as a doubles player last season, and will look to use that to their advantage.
“This is a great accomplishment for us, and playing at the U.S. Open again is going to be so much fun,” said Weiss.

Joining Dangin & Weiss at States will be the Van Cotts, as well as the Hills East duo of Ashley Pursoo & Christina Zhao, and Sachem’s Alyssa Davis & Ema Villacreses. Pursoo & Zhao were the third-place winners as they won 6-1, 6-4 over Davis & Villacreses.
