Wheatley’s Menon Wins Nassau County Singles Title

When Wheatley’s Saje Menon made the decision to return to high school tennis for his senior season, he did so with two goals in mind. One was to win a state championship with Wheatley, just like he and the Wildcats did when he was an eighth-grader, and the other was to win the Nassau County singles title.

He accomplished the latter on Saturday at Eisenhower Park. First, he defeated Jericho’s Preston Wang 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals, before beating Will Bohner of Friends Academy 6-4, 6-2 in the county final.

“At the start of the season, I was thinking about winning the county title with the team, and then hopefully being on this stage today,” Menon said. “It’s great to win this title. I remember playing here four years ago as an eighth grader and I made the quarters. I was pretty happy with that, but this season I started with the goal of winning this, and to do it today is amazing.”

Menon completed the draw without dropping a set, utilizing his aggressive playing style and oftentimes coming to the net while serving and volleying. This approach allowed him to control the points and keep his opponents off balance.

“My kick [serve] was working really well today and bouncing high so I just tried to come in as fast as I could, and it worked out,” Menon said.

Wheatley head coach Mike Kazin spoke glowingly of his star senior, whom he says has been not only an impact player on court this season, but the ideal leader who has set by example.

“He has been so committed to our team, and is such a stand-up kid,” Kazin said. “He comes to every practice, and has been a pleasure to have around the other guys. He’s got the most composure of any player I’ve coached, and always remains composed and resilient. He’s probably the most mentally tough kid I’ve ever coached and it really makes him stand out.”

Menon now sets his sights on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Individual Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center beginning on Friday, June 5.

“I’m going to put my head down, and keep training to get ready for that,” he said. “I’m pretty confident heading to States and I’m excited to compete there.”

As the runner-up, Bohner also qualifies for next weekend’s NYSPHSAA Championships, as does Jericho’s Nick Chin, who beat fellow Jayhawk Preston Wang 6-4, 6-2 in the third-place match.
