Wheatley Beats Cold Spring Harbor To Win First Nassau County Division 2 Title Since 2022

The Wheatley Wildcats captured its first Nassau County Small School (Division 2) title since 2022 with a 4-1 victory over Cold Spring Harbor on the courts of Syosset High School on Monday afternoon.
Wheatley has been in the Small School (Division 2) final every season since its inception in 2022. The team won the New York State Public High School Association (NYSPHSAA) title in 2022, but came up short in the Nassau final each of the last years.
This year, the Wildcats would not be denied again.
“This is my third time in the county championship, and first time that we’ve won it, so it’s really special to win it,” said Julian Ostrow, who plays first doubles alongside Chase Yoon.
Together, Ostrow & Yoon entered Monday’s final not only undefeated as a doubles team, but the pairing hadn’t even dropped a set all season. The duo continued that streak with a 6-4, 6-3 win at first doubles which clinched the county title.

“To clinch it means so much,” Ostrow added. “We played against these guys before so we knew what we had to do. We were a little shaky out of the gate but were able to pull it together at the end.”
Yoon added:
“It’s my first year on the team and the fact that I’ve been able to have such an amazing experience throughout the season, and now winning counties, feels great. Julian and I always support each other on the court, and have such good chemistry.”
Ostrow & Yoon’s win came following Liel Agajan’s 6-1, 6-3 victory at second singles, and Saje Menon’s 6-0, 6-0 triumph at first singles.

“Before the season we had high expectations. I knew we had more depth in our lineup overall, and having Saje join the team slots everyone down a spot, which makes us even deeper,” said Wheatley head coach Mike Kazin. “He’s basically a lock at first singles, and our first doubles team hasn’t lost a set all year. It comes from the top, and I think our first singles and first doubles teams push everyone to strive for more and try to reach their level.”
The third doubles team of Spencer Edelstein & Max Greenman came back to win 2-6, 6-4, [11-9] for Wheatley, while Cold Spring Harbor’s Dev Ghandi & Sebastian Mayer were 5-7, 6-2, [10-8] winners at second doubles to round out the scoring.

Wheatley now advances to the Long Island Small School (Division 2) Championship where it will play the Suffolk County Champion, which is still to be determined.
“Before the season started we had high expectations and it’s really nice to see that play out throughout the year,” Kazin said. “We’re looking forward to playing the Suffolk champion.
