Cold Spring Harbor Wins Fifth Straight Nassau County Small School Title

For the fifth consecutive season, Cold Spring Harbor will represent Nassau County in the Long Island Small School Championship.
The Seahawks defeated Wheatley 3-2 in the county final at Massapequa High School, winning all three doubles flights to secure the victory and win the county title for the fifth year in a row.
“I think we wanted to make sure to support each other, and cheering on our teammates was the main thing,” said Cold Spring Harbor co-captain Sylvana Guariglia. “We tried to take it one point at a time in each match.”

Cold Spring Harbor got off to the early lead as twin sisters Harper Wohlferd & Quinn Wohlferd won 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles to give their team the 1-0 advantage.
“Our communication,” Harper said when asked of what makes them work together on court. “I think we did well with that today.”
The Seahawks would win at first doubles as Isabella Chomyonk & Elizabeth Mullen posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory. But Wheatley would answer with Sonali Prabhakar’s 6-1, 6-0 win at first singles, and Sarike Prabhakar’s 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles.

That brought the county championship to be determined on the third doubles court. After Kelsey Miller & Juliette Barry won the first set 6-3 for Cold Spring Harbor, the match headed into a second-set tiebreaker. Miller & Barry held their nerve, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage in the breaker, and even after their opponents won three straight points to trim the lead to 5-6, Miller & Barry closed out the win on their fourth match point., winning 6-3, 7-6(4) to seal their team’s county title.
Cold Spring Harbor advances to the Long Island Small School Championship against Suffolk champs Ross School. That match is scheduled for Thursday at Shoreham-Wading River High School. The winner moves on to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Team Championships on Friday, November 6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
“We’re going to keep practicing hard this week and keep a positive attitude,” Guariglia added. “We’re going to go in with a strong mindset and do the best we can.”
