American Andy Roddick has withdrawn from the 2012 Australian Open. He was trailing two sets to one when he was forced to retire against Australian Lleyton Hewitt. He was trailing 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and said, "Lleyton. That’s it," and retired.
After seeing a trainer early in the match he went on to battle in 16 more games before the rolled right ankle forced him to succumb to playing. After shaking hands with the umpire, he quickly picked up his gear and disappeared from the court.
The crowd, who was used to cheering for their hometown favorite, gave a standing ovation to Roddick to show him respect that they felt was earned. Heweitt now goes on to compete against Canadian Milos Raonic in the third round.
