American John Isner defeated fellow countryman Ryan Sweeting in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the Delray Beach International Tennis Championship quarterfinals. The 11th-ranked Isner showed a stronger fight this match compared to his struggle during his first round win over Jesse Levine.

“Whenever, in the past, when I’ve played tournaments in humidity I’ve always struggled because I hadn’t acclimated yet,” Isner said. “But tonight I felt so much better than I did yesterday.

Isner will now go up against Bernard Tomic in the quarterfinals. Tomic defeated Tim Smyczek of the U.S. in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, to advance in the draw.

Marinko Matosevic, a qualifier from Australia, defeated Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr., 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to his first ever ATP quarterfinal.

“It was a tough match and I’m happy to get through and make my first quarterfinal,” said Matosevic, who next faces 2010 Delray Beach champion Ernests Gulbis.

Bogomolov did, however, have a stellar year in 2011. He moved up in the ATP Tour rankings from 166th to 34th. Bogomolov struggled throughout the entire match and even after his first set victory.
