Novak Djokovic has set up a semifinal meeting against Juan Monaco at the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open after defeating David Ferrer of Spain in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. Djokovic won the first set in just 32 min. and broke Ferrer in the first of the second before he would mount an unsuccessful comeback. Ferrer broke back and held his own until Djokovic broke for a 5-4 lead. It led to a tie-breaker where Djokovic was clearly in control in the ending points.

""It’s always going to tough against David, he’s one of the greatest competitors on the circuit," said Djokovic, winner of the last three Grand Slams. "I didn’t want to get to the third set because physically he’s always there."

Monaco, celebrating his 28th birthday, defeated American Mardy Fish to advance to meet Djokovic in the semis. The loss marked Fish’s first defeat in seven Masters 1000 quarterfinal appearances.

"I can’t believe it," said Monaco, the 21st seed. "I have a lot of emotions; it is good to celebrate this way, playing unbelievable tennis on my birthday."
