Former world number one-ranked Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark has been upset by Angelique Kerber of Germany in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the finals of the e-Boks Open in Copenhagen, Denmark. Kerber was able to break Wozniacki’s serve three times overall in each set to win the title in just 1 hour and 38 min. Wozniacki, currently ranked number six in the world, was hoping for her third straight title at her home tournament, but was unable to match the German’s strong serve which was broke just twice in each set.

"It has been a fantastic week for me here," Kerber said. "I love playing here, and today I played a really good match against Caroline. I’m happy I was able to raise my level for the last few matches here and I’ve gained a lot of confidence. I’m very motivated to continue working hard. This just adds to it."

Kerber had never beaten a top 10-ranked player before February, but since then, has had wins over Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli in Paris, Li Na in Indian Wells, Calif. and now Wozniacki in Copenhagen. Wozniacki had been 14-0 at the e-Boks Open going into the final, winning the title in its first two years in 2010 and 2011.

"You always want to win … yes it’s disappointing to lose, but it’s not a disaster," Wozniacki said. "You lose matches sometimes, and today was one of those times. There’s a new match and new tournament coming, so you go on."
