Novak Djokovic’s strive to win the French Open championship begins with the Monte Carlo Masters, beginning this week in Monte-Carlo, Monaco. He will attempt to end the reign of Rafael Nadal which has lasted in Monte Carlo since 2005. Nadal has also won every French Open since 2005 except for in 2009. The world number one-ranked Djokovic has a bye in the first round of the event, as he awaits the winner of the match between world 103rd-ranked Victor Hanescu and Andreas Seppi, currently ranked 44th in the world.

Nadal has 37 consecutive wins in Monte Carlo dating back to 2005 and an overall 39-1 record in Monte Carlo. If Djokovic wins in Monte Carlo it will be a sweet victory to claim Nadal’s first loss there in years. Nadal is still without a Grand Slam title since he won the 2011 French Open.
