Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has started off his 2012 clay court season on a positive note with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Andreas Seppi in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Djokovic was up 4-0 after just 19 min. prior to Seppi fighting back in the second set.

"I haven’t played a match on a clay court since Roland Garros last year, so I’m happy with how I played," Djokovic said. He now goes onto play Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine who defeated Bernard Tomic to advance, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. "He’s a very talented player, comes up with some shots that are not really typical for a tennis player," Djokovic said. "He comes up with some drop shots, changes the pace very much. That’s why he’s very dangerous on clay."

Dolgopolov is confident in creating a upset. He lost in straight sets to Djokovic in the fourth round if the 2011 U.S. Open after the Serb had to work hard to take the first 7-6.

"After that, I think I can compete with him," Dolgopolov said. "I mean, he’s number one, I’m number 21. Obviously, he’s higher in the rankings. He’s playing more consistent, but I think I have my chances."

Gilles Simon also defeated Frederico Gil in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 and now awaits either Janko Tipsarevic or Albert Montanes. Julien Benneteau now goes onto compete against Andy Murray in the third round after a defeat of Jurgen Melzer, 6-4, 6-3.
