A back injury has forced world number four-ranked Andy Murray of Great Britain to withdraw from the 2012 Madrid Open. He last won the tournament in 2008 when it was played on indoor hard courts and has reached the Madrid quarterfinals in 2009 and 2010.

"I always love coming to Madrid so it is a big disappointment," said Murray. "I look forward to returning next year and wish everyone a great week of tennis”

Murray has competed on two different clay-court tournaments this year where he reached the quarterfinals in both Monte Carlo and in Barcelona. Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick also withdrew from the tournament in past days. The top three ranked players will remain, including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
