Unfortunately, the second round of the French Open Qualifiers did not bode well for Americans in the draw. Of the 11 men and women to move on to the second round, only four remain in contention. Tomorrow, those four players will compete in Day Three of the qualifying tournament, and if successful, will have in chance in main draw action beginning Sunday, May 27.

On the men’s side, both Denis Kudla and veteran Michael Russell lost to Argentines—Kudla was defeated by Eduardo Schwank (3-6, 3-6) and Russell was defeated handily by Martin Alund (2-6, 6-3). Bobby Reynolds and Alex Kuznetsov were also defeated in the second round, and that leaves only one American male, Jesse Levine, standing in the draw. He took out Brazil’s Thiago Alves, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to give himself a shot in the final round.

The women’s side has fared somewhat better than the men’s, with three American women still standing. Twenty-two-year-old Alexa Glatch won her match in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Julia Cohen and Lauren Davis are the other two American women to advance and will meet each other in the final qualifying round. The veteran Jill Craybas, as well as Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Brengle were defeated.
