World number two Maria Sharapova advanced to the second round of the 2012 French Open by defeating Alexandra Cadantu, 6-0, 6-0. It took Sharapova only 48 minutes to earn the win her match, one where she had 18 winners, while Cadantu was unable to make one. However, Sharapova did have to save three break points. At 22-years old, it was Cadantu’s French Open debut.

"I’m really happy with the way my preparation has been coming into this tournament," said Sharapova. "I feel like with every year I’ve improved and enjoy it much more. Every year, I learn a lot more about the game and point construction. I feel like I’m moving a lot better than I did years previously, which has helped me a lot in the recovery process within the point."

Also in opening round action at Roland Garros, world number four-ranked Petra Kvitova defeated Ashleigh Barty, 6-1, 6-2. Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, lost the first game, but won six consecutive afterwards to take the first set against Barty. With 16 winners to 15 unforced errors, Barty could not compete with her three winners and 26 unforced errors. Barty, at only 18 years of age, is the youngest player in the draw. Only eight teenagers have entered the French Open this year.

"After Rome I had some days off, which helped a lot," said Kvitova. "I’ve just been practicing before the French Open and I’m feeling very well."
