Murray Struggles With Back Spasms to Advance at French Open

Playing through back spasms which limited his ability, Great Britain’s Andy Murray advanced to the third round of the 2012 French Open with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 win over Finalnd’s Jarkko Nieminen. In the opening set, Murray had his serve broken three times. He called for a trainer after losing the first four games. Murray was broken again in the opening of the second set. The trainer was called two more times. He then began moving better and got back on serve at 4-4. Murray next faces Santiago Giraldo from Columbia in the third round.
"I was absolutely fine yesterday in practice, no problem, went to bed and I was fine, and I woke up this morning, I couldn’t put any weight on my left leg," said Murray. "I practiced. It was okay. Not great, but it was okay. Then, before the match, I wasn’t feeling great and talked about not playing."
Last year, Murray reached the semifinals of the French Open, and with 22 ATP World Tour singles titles under his belt, Murray has yet to win a title on clay.
On the women’s side of the draw, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki defeated Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the third round. A former number one, the ninth-seeded Wozniacki is still seeking her first Grand Slam title and has yet to advance past the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
