Kohlschreiber Stuns Nadal in Quarterfinals of Gerry Weber Open

Defending champion Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany cut Rafael Nadal’s start to the grass court season short with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the recently-crowned French Open champion in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. Kohlschreiber, currently ranked 28th in the world, will now face either Czech Tomas Berdych or fellow German Tommy Haas in the next round.
“I have got to congratulate him, he played really well, was very aggressive and just played better,” said Nadal. “I am going to spend a few days completely away from the tennis court and then make up my mind how I will carry on preparing for Wimbledon."
Nadal was quickly down 2-0 this time with Kohlschreiber winning the first set in a little more than 30 minutes.
“I did nothing wrong today and played world-class tennis,” said Kohlschreiber.
The Spaniard missed the chance to break Kohlschreiber three times on his serve in the fourth game of the second set after he saved two breaks in the opening game. Kohlschreiber is attempting to join Roger Federer and Yevgeny Kafelnikov as the only players to defend their title at the Gerry Weber Open.
