Wild card Tommy Haas defeated five-time champion and world number three-ranked Roger Federer, 7-6(5), 6-4 to win the 2012 Gerry Weber Open for the second time Sunday. With the win, Haas became the first German tennis player to win twice. Haas recovered from losing his serve in the first game by winning the opening set in a tie-breaker and then getting the decisive break in the ninth game of the second set.
"It was a long time coming since I had the chance to get to that point,” said Haas, who started the season outside the top 200 on the ATP Tour.
Haas beat Federer in two of their first three meetings early in their careers, but has not beaten Federer in more than a decade, losing his last nine matchups.
"It’s my 13th title … it’s probably up there as the best, if not the sweetest one, especially considering the injuries," said Haas.
Haas last won the grass court tournament in 2009, when he won against Novak Djokovic in the final. Both players had been broken only once this week.
