Men’s and Women’s American Hopeful Field Narrowed to Six at 2012 Wimbledon Qualifiers

As Day Three of the 2012 Wimbledon Qualifiers came to a close, four American men remain in the draw. The number five seed, Jesse Levine, secured his final round spot by defeating fellow American, Wayne Odesnick, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ryan Sweeting also moves on to the final round with his win over Peter Torebko in a long five-setter, 3-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4. Veteran Michael Russell will face Yuichi Sugita of Japan in the second round, and Brian Baker will face Maxime Teixeira of France. Unfortunately, young up-and-comer Denis Kudla lost his second round match to Jerzy Janowicz, 1-6, 0-6, 2-6. American Rajeev Ram was also eliminated in the second round by Germany’s Dustin Brown, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6.
On the women’s side of the draw, only two American women remain, as Alexa Glatch and Coco Vandeweghe both secured second round appearances to keep their Wimbledon hopes alive. Glatch defeated Aravane Rezai of France, 7-6, 6-2, while Vandeweghe defeated Kathrin Woerle of Germany, 6-4, 6-4.
