Number three seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland defeated Albert Ramos of Spain 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in just 79 minutes to reach the second round of Wimbledon. As a record 16-time Grand Slam title winner, Federer is seeking his seventh Wimbledon title this year and will face Italian Fabio Fognini in round two action. Ramos, who is ranked 43rd in the world, has never won a match on grass. The last Grand Slam title that Federer won was the 2010 Australian Open. American Pete Sampras won a record of seven Wimbledon titles, a mark which Federer is hoping to equal this year.

"I was happy with the way things progressed during the match," said Federer. "I was able to return well, almost breaking him every single time. It was a good match for me, obviously. I felt very good out there today."

In the women’s side of the draw, world number one and 2012 French Open champ Maria Sharapova cruised through her opening round Wimbledon match, defeating Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova, 6-2, 6-3. Sharapova won her first Wimbledon title in 2004 at the age of 17. Last year, she lost in the finals to Petra Kvitova. During the first round, Sharapova broke Rodionova five times. Sharapova was broken once in each set, even when she was serving out the match at 5-1 in the second. Sharapova will meet Tsvetana Pironkova from Bulgaria in the second round. Sharapova is a perfect 3-0 against Pironkova in three career matchups.

"The first one’s always tricky, and I had a few letdowns towards the end of both sets, but overall I’m pretty happy with the way I performed," said Sharapova of her first round match. "It’s always a very nice feeling for me to be back on Centre Court here at Wimbledon. It’s been a year and it’s such a special place for me."
