Wimbledon 2012 Update: Wozniacki and Stosur Both Upset in Round One

Samantha Stosur was defeated by Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, making her the highest seed to be knocked out of this year’s Wimbledon so far. The fifth-seeded Stosur, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, surrendered the first set by losing six games in a row, but came back to win the next six games in the second set. Stosur lost the first three games in the third set before fighting her way back.
"This year I hated it a little bit less than in previous years," Stosur said. "It’s just disappointing because you want to do well here. I still love playing here at Wimbledon. But obviously it hasn’t been my very best tournament."
In past years, Stosur has not made it beyond the third round in nine attempts at Wimbledon. Rus advances to face China’s Shuai Peng, ranked 30th in the world, a 7-6, 6-3 winner over Ayumi Morita of Japan.
Former world number one-ranked Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was also knocked out of the first round in a match that lasted more than three hours to Austria’s Tamira Paszek, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-4. Wozniacki wasted two match points in the second set to lose the match. She failed to convert two break points after saving four set points. At 5-3, Paszek was unsuccessful in serving out the match, but she broke Wozniacki soon after to win the match.
"It really sucks when you lose. Especially after having two match points and not taking them. It wasn’t because I played badly. She just went for it, and that’s it,” said Wozniacki. "I just need to move forward. You can’t dwell in your past but move forward, look forward. That’s it."
Paszek moves on to face Alize Cornet of France, a 6-0, 7-6 winner over Russian Nina Bratchikova.
