The organization, Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S., has a mission statement that says it will raise the level of consciousness about and increase the awareness of cancer through education and to provide a wide range of services and support for patients, survivors and family members dealing with cancer. And five Glen Cove teens—Sydney Menzin, Michael Rovner, Carly Rovner, Christina Nardine and Kelly Basdavanos—embarked on a mission of their own; to help this worthy cause by organizing a tennis tournament fundraiser with all proceeds going to Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S.
For the first time this year, a free clinic was held prior to the tournament, conducted by pros that were at the site through the generosity of Robbie Wagner’s Tournament Training Center. In addition to a number of local sponsors, the USTA Eastern Section donated prizes and giveaways and the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) donated tennis balls for the tournament and as a giveaway.
"This was a great event," said Bill Mecca, the USTA Eastern Section Tennis Service Representative for Long Island. "It’s a great example of the character of the kids that play this game. These kids are to be commended and encouraged according to Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi, they serve as a role model for all other Glen Cove teens, and in fact, all Long Island teenagers."
