Bernard Tomic ended a six-match losing streak on Monday at the 2012 Rogers Cup in Toronto, as the 19-year-old Australian beat Germany’s Michael Berber 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. He moves on to face defending champ Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the second round.
"It’s a really good feeling. … Seven weeks in a row I’ve been losing, and I think the opportunity here to play and play well is good, and confidence that I need," said Tomic. "I am just happy that I won my match finally, and I’ve got confidence leading into the next important match."
With world number one ranked Roger Federer skipping the tournament to rest, Rafa Nadal opting out due to injury and several top players still arriving from the London Olympics, the Toronto Masters offers a chance for an unseeded player to make a move. In their two previous meetings, Tomic lost to Djokovic at last year’s Wimbledon and at the Rome Masters in May.
“I think that Rogers Cup in both Montreal and Toronto do a tremendous job in organizing the event and it’s one of the best [Masters] 1000 events that we have in the world of tennis,” said Djokovic. “Every player enjoys playing there. I’m really looking forward to coming there and playing my best tennis.”
