The USTA has announced that world number one-ranked Roger Federer of Switzerland, the reigning Wimbledon champion and five-time U.S. Open champion, has been named the top seed in men’s singles draw at the 2012 U.S. Open, set for Aug. 27-Sept. 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, will be followed by second seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia, the defending U.S. Open champion; number three Andy Murray of Great Britain, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist; and the number four seed, David Ferrer of Spain.

For 2012, the U.S. Open followed the ATP World Tour rankings released Aug. 20, 2012 to determine the men’s singles seeds. This is the 11th consecutive year that the U.S. Open has seeded 32 players in both singles events.

The 31-year-old Federer is 56-7 this year leading up to the U.S. Open. He has won six titles in 2012, including three ATP World Tour Masters Series events, along with his seventh Wimbledon title. He broke the record held by Pete Sampras of the most weeks at number one this year, surpassing Sampras’ record of 286 total weeks. Federer won the U.S. Open title from 2004-2008. He is tied with Sampras and Jimmy Connors for five U.S. Open titles—the most U.S. Open titles in the Open Era.

John Isner will be the highest-seeded American at number nine. The 2003 U.S. Open champion, Andy Roddick, is seeded 20th, Mardy Fish is seeded 23rd and Sam Querrey is seeded 27th.

The singles draws for the 2012 U.S. Open will be revealed live during an official draw ceremony tomorrow, Aug. 23, at noon ET at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, streamed live on USOpen.org. Defending U.S. Open champions Novak Djokovic and Samantha Stosur will make an appearance at the ceremony.
