The USTA has announced that world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus has been named the top seed in women’s singles at the 2012 U.S. Open, set to begin next week Aug. 27 and run through Sept. 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Following Azarenka, the 2012 Australian Open champion, will be second seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, the 2012 Wimbledon runner-up, and the number three seed Maria Sharapova of Russia, whose 2012 French Open title completed a career Grand Slam. Three-time U.S. Open champion Serena Williams, the 2012 Wimbledon champion, is the fourth seed after winning singles and doubles Gold Medals at the 2012 Olympics in London.

This year, the U.S. Open followed the WTA rankings released Aug. 20 to determine the women’s singles seeds. This is the 11th consecutive year that the U.S. Open has seeded 32 players in both singles events. Australia’s Samantha Stosur will defend her 2011 U.S. Open title as the seventh seed. Three-time U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium, who has won 21 straight U.S. Open matches, is the 23rd seed in her final U.S. Open appearance. Two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams is the only former U.S. Open champion unseeded in the women’s singles field.
