Samantha Stosur began her title defense at the 2012 U.S. Open Monday afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 win over 21-year-old Croatian Petra Martic at Arthur Ashe Stadium. So far in 2012, Stosur had lost in the first round at the Australian Open, the second round at Wimbledon, the first round at the London Olympics, but lost in the semis of the French Open to Sara Errani.

"It was fantastic. It was great to get out there again. I felt like I was ready to go," said Stosur. "The first match up on the first day and it was a good start. I certainly won’t complain about being out there. It was just, yeah, nice to come back and play well today."

Stosur needed just under an hour to defeat Martic, as they were able to get their match in before play was suspended due to rain. The only previous career meeting between Stosur and Martic came in Madrid earlier this year, where Martic gave Stosur a scare before losing out in a final set tie-break.

Stosur faces some tough potential waters ahead in her quarter of the draw as in it are world number one-ranked Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters and Li Na.
