Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France, the fifth-seeded men’s single player was defeated by 52nd-ranked Martin Klizan of Slovakia in four sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at the 2012 U.S. Open. This is the first time that Tsonga has fallen earlier than the third round at the U.S Open since 2007. Tsonga had just four aces throughout the entire match and played a very erratic game. He was able to fight back and power through the second set with a 6-1 lead. The third set saw a fatigued Tsonga attempting to end points early with many forehands going long.

Klizan fed off Tsonga’s lack of determination after he broke one of his racquets after a missed backhand. He monopolized the drive to succeed and was able to by winning the fourth easily 6-1, and the final set 6-3 over Tsonga.

"I’m disappointed because it’s a major and I didn’t win this round for a few years now. Yeah. So I’m disappointed, but anyway, you know, it’s tennis," said Tsonga. "Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose."

This is the first time that Klizan will be in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. He will go onto play the winner of Jeremy Chardin and Matthew Ebdin match in the third round.

American Mardy Fish fought back from a big hole on Ashe Stadium Court today, coming from two sets back to defeat Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in five sets 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. After dropping the second set tie-breaker where he displayed very poor shot selection, Fish took command and steamrolled the rest of the way. Davydenko managed only five games in the final three sets combined. Fish will now advance to play either Jimmy Wang or the 16th-seeded Gilles Simon on Saturday.
