2012 U.S. Open Preview (Day Nine)

Day Nine of the 2012 U.S. Open will be played Tuesday, under the threatening Flushing Meadows, N.Y. skies which call for sporadic thunderstorms and intermittent sunshine. The weather has played a small role in only slight delays the first eight days of the event, but for the first time on Tuesday, it may wreak havoc on the schedule and cause significant delays.

Day Nine action at Arthur Ashe Stadium begins at 11:00 a.m. as defending champ Samantha Stosur of Australia takes on top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in women’s singles quarterfinals. Stosur has yet to defeat Azarenka in six outings, as Azarenka has dominated, never dropping a set to the defending champ Stosur. Immediately following on Ashe in the second women’s quarterfinals match of the day, Olympic Silver Medalist Maria Sharapova faces the 11th-seed, France’s Marion Bartoli. Sharapova, like Azarenka, is undefeated lifetime against her quarterfinals opponent.

Rounding out the Day Session on Ashe will be men’s singles action as number 18th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland faces the top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Djokovic has 10 wins in 12 matches lifetime against Wawrinka.

Under the lights on Ashe beginning at 7:00 p.m., fourth round men’s singles action finds American Andy Roddick, the 20 seed, looking to extend his career against the seventh-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina. And men’s doubles quarterfinals cap off Day Nine at Ashe as the second seeded team of Americans Bob & Mike Bryan face the French duo of Julien Benneteau & Nicolas Mahut.

Beginning at noon at Louis Armstrong Stadium, two matchups featuring seeded players will begin with France’s Richard Gasquet, the 13th-seed. facing the four seed, David Ferrer of Spain, followed by Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, the number eight seed, facing the 19th-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Other matches highlighting Day Nine at the 2012 U.S. Open include:

â–ºThe men’s doubles quarterfinals match on the Grandstand featuring the unseeded American team of Christian & Ryan Harrison facing the number nine seeds, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan & Jean-Julien Rojer of The Netherlands

â–ºMixed-doubles semifinals action featuring the top-seeded team of Liezel Huber of the United States & Max Mirnyi of Belarus facing the fourth-seeded Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic & Poland’s Marcin Matkowski on the Grandstand

â–ºIn Junior Girls action, American Victoria Duval, who just last week faced Kim Clijsters in the main draw, facing the third-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard on Court 4 at 11:00 a.m.

â–ºOn Court 14, Ossing, N.Y.’s Jamie Loeb teams up with fellow American Brooke Austin to face Veronika Kudermetova of Russia & Christina Makarova of the United States in Girls Junior Doubles action
