Match play has resumed at the 2012 U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. as third-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia continues her match against the number 11 seed, Marion Bartoli of France. The match is a continuation of yesterday’s quarterfinals encounter, and resumed play in the first set with Bartoli leading 4-0. The winner will face top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the women’s singles semifinals on Friday, weather and schedule permitting. Azarenka defeated defending U.S. Open champ Samantha Stosur on Tuesday, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(7/5).
Sharapova is undefeated lifetime against Bartoli, and is making her first U.S. Open quarterfinals appearance since 2006 when she took home the Women’s Singles Title. Today’s match marks Bartoli’s first-ever quarterfinals appearance at the U.S. Open, having reached at the least the final eight or better at the other three majors over the course of her career.
