Sock Reaches Quarterfinals in Memphis With Win Over Blake

American Jack Sock advanced to his second tour-level quarterfinal after defeating fellow wild card and countryman James Blake 7-5, 6-4 at the 2013 U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis. Sock saved nine of the 10 break points he faced to clinch the win in one hour and 48 minutes. Sock will face Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals, after Lopez’s opponent, the number six seed Tommy Haas, withdrew prior to their match with an illness.
Also advancing was Denis Istomin, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Lleyton Hewitt. Istomin converted four of the six break points he created and saved the four he faced to record his second victory this season over Hewitt. Istomin advances to face Michael Russell, who defeated Lukasz Kubot of Poland 6-2, 6-4 in 63 minutes.
Top-seeded Marin Cilic defeated Igor Sijsling 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(7) and will next square off against the fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over American Donald Young. Another American, fourth-seeded Sam Querrey, was defeated by Marinko Matosevic, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Matosevic plays seventh-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov next, a winner over qualifier Rhyne Williams 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
