Ferrer Into Quarterfinals of Portugal Open

David Ferrer defeated world number 73 Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the 2013 Portugal Open to advance to the quarterfinals. Ferrer is attempting to win his third ATP World Tour title of the year after wins at the Heineken Open in Auckland and the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires. He will next face Victor Hanescu, whom he has a 2-0 head-to-head lead over lifetime. Hanescu defeated Benoit Paire 7-6(2), 6-4 to set up his quarterfinals appearance with Ferrer.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals was Fabio Fognini, a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4 winner over Paolo Lorenzi. Fognini, ranked 25th in the world, reached the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters semifinals where he fell to Novak Djokovic. Also in the quarterfinals is 21-year-old Pablo Carreno-Busta, a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 winner over David Goffin 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Carreno-Busta has risen more than 400 places in the ATP Men’s Singles Rankings this year to his current position of 228th in the world.
