Defending Gerry Weber Open Champ Haas Advances to Quarterfinals

On Thursday at the 2013 Gerry Weber Open, defending champion Tommy Haas advanced to the quarterfinals of the by outlasting Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (5), 6-4. The 35-year-old Haas, who won the event in 2009, is coming off a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open. Haas is the oldest player in the ATP top 100 men’s singles and is looking for his second title of the year. He is now ranked 11th. He won last year’s Gerry Weber title by beating Roger Federer. Haas next plays Gael Monfils.

Also at the Gerry Weber, Richard Gasquet defeated Jurgen Melzer, 6-3, 6-1. Gasquet has won both the Qatar ExxonMobil Open and the Open Sud de France this year. Melzer is currently 12-55 against top 10 opponents in the Emirates ATP Rankings. Gasquet will next face off against eighth-seeded Florian Mayer, who defeated Leonardo Mayer, 6-2, 6-3.

The 2011 Gerry Weber Open champion and sixth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated fellow German Tobias Kamke, 6-4, 6-3, hitting 12 aces in the match. Kohlschreiber advanced to his eighth quarterfinals at the event where he will face Mikhail Youzhny.
