Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has withdrawn from the Bank of the West Classic, set for July 22-28 at Stanford University due to a hamstring strain. Bartoli is the second prominent player to pull out of the tournament this week, following Maria Sharapova who pulled out due to a left hip injury suffered during Wimbledon.

"During Wimbledon, I developed a strain in my hamstring which has not healed over the past two weeks,” said Bartoli, winner of the Bank of the West Classic in 2009. "I have been receiving therapy and was optimistic that I would be able to participate. It is one of my favorite tournaments on the circuit. Unfortunately, the injury has not completely healed and I will be unable to participate.”

Bartoli’s withdrawal opened a spot for former Stanford All-American Mallory Burdette in the main draw. Burdette turned pro shortly after the event last year and reached the third round of the U.S. Open. Burdette will be making her second straight appearance at the Bank of the West Classic, returning to her alma mater where she posted a 104-22 overall record (60-8 in dual play) in her three seasons at Stanford and helped lead the Cardinal to the 2010 National Title. Burdette is currently ranked at 78th in the world. She cracked the top-100 in April after reaching the third round of Indian Wells in March. Burdette reached the third round of the Family Circle Cup this year before losing to eventual champion Serena Williams.
