Tommy Haas kicked off play at the 2013 Western & Southern Open on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over South African Kevin Anderson in Cincinnati. The 11th-seeded Haas broke serve once in each set for his 38th win of 2013. He is closing on winning 40 matches in a season for the first time since 2006, when he finished with a 49-21 overall record for the year.
Spain’s Feliciano Lopez rebounded from a first-round defeat at last week’s Rogers Cup in Montreal to upset the 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-6(4). Lopez, who won his third ATP World Tour title at the Aegon International in Eastbourne, advances to face Jeremy Chardy for a potential third-round encounter with Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro. Del Potro will face Nikolay Davydenko in the second round after Davydenko’s 7-6(8), 6-3 over Benoit Paire. Davydenko is coming off a quarterfinal appearance at last week’s Rogers Cup in Montreal where he fell to Canadian Vasek Pospisil.
