Bethpage Park Tennis Center Hosts Women’s Preseason Invitational
Bethpage Park Tennis Center hosted a non-sanctioned, two-day round-robin match format event conceived and organized by Bethpage Park Tennis Center Owner Steve Kaplan, with help from Hannah Camhi, Vivian Chang and Jenny Kellner, to provide singles and doubles match play opportunities for top New York area college players, as well as up and coming seniors.
"I think there’s a need for a low stress, fun and competitive match event like this." said Kaplan, the coach of Camhi, Chang and Kellner, all three State High School Individual Champions.
"I was hoping to work on some of the areas that I’ve concentrated on this summer to ready myself for the fall season," said Brown Sophomore Camhi.
Sarah Kandath, a junior at Brown, traveled from Albany to Long Island to "get some great matches in and practice with some of the players I’ve enjoyed spending time with in juniors." Amanda Mulliawan of Princeton noted that, "I can find some great players to hit with by me, but it’s so rare to get to practice high-level doubles with three other girls."
Edmond Yau, the father of Dartmouth star sophomore Katherine Yau, said, "I believe it’s a meaningful event for juniors from the Metropolitan area and Long Islanders who have played USTA tournaments for years. For juniors and seniors who are planning for college, for players who are freshman and sophomores, to meet and play a
round. The best timing is between the second and third week of August, which is after the national hard court and before returning to college. This event should be promoted, as it is very meaningful. It enabled the exchanging of ideas and building of friendships, especially for the parents and juniors who go travel down the path to college tennis."
Kaplan added, "Everyone had a good time together and got some valuable match play. I think the players are looking forward to meeting again next year."
