Soderling and Schiavone Play the Role of Spoliers at Roland Garros
Federer and Wozniacki sent packing at French Open
In 2010 French Open men’s action on Tuesday at Roland Garros, Robin Soderling upended top seed Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Soderling, who came into the match winless in 12 attempts against Federer, was able to break Federer’s serve 44 percent of the time on conversion chances, while Federer was only able to convert break point 29 percent of the time.
"I played better and better every match," Soderling said, "and today, I played really well. Everybody who is still in the draw [is capable] of going all the way. I have a really tough semifinal to come."
Soderling’s semifinal opponent was to be decided laster in the day as Czech player and number 15 seed Tomas Berdych defeated 11th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Berdych, who has yet to drop a set at the 2010 French Open, continued his dominance in advancing to the semis where he will face Soderling.
On the women’s side, Italian Francesca Schiavone, the number 17 seed at this year’s French Open upset three-seeded Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 during Tuesday action at Roland Garros. The advancing Schiavone will make her first ever semifinal appearance. In other women’s action, fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva faced fellow Russian and 19th-seeded Petrova Dementieva and moved on by by knocking out Petrova 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Wednesday’s French Open action will feature the two final quarterfinal matchups as top-seeded Serena Williams will face the seventh-seed Samantha Stosur, and fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic will take on Yaroslava Shvedova.
