Two of the lower seeds at the BMW Open by FWU AG in Munich, Germany moved on Wednesday afternoon as the second round of the tournament picked up.

In the early match, third-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who won the Munich tournament back in 2010, faced qualifier Martin Klizan. Klizan used a powerful serve to control the tempo, smashing 10 aces in the match that lasted nearly three hours. Klizan dropped a tough-fought first set 6-7(5), but battled back to win the second 6-2 to force the match to a third set tie-breaker. There, Klizan won the final set 7-6(2) to upset third-seeded Youzhny and reach the third round.

Klizan will now square off with Denis Istomin, who has surprised a lot of people with his play in this tournament, having knocked out fifth-seeded Phillip Kohlschreiber in the first round on Tuesday, and parlayed that into his first quarterfinal of the season by beating Marinko Matosevic 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-5.

“I am so happy to win two rounds, especially on clay,” said Istomin. “I like to play on clay, but it is not my favorite surface. It was a good comeback today.”
