Serena Powers Past Scheepers In Less Than An Hour

Serena Williams dropped her second-round matchup two weeks ago at the French Open, but avoided that upset on Thursday at Wimbledon, routing South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers 6-1, 6-1 in a match that lasted not even 50 minutes.

Serena broke Scheepers early in the first set which put the ball back in her court. From there, she overpowered the 94th ranked Scheepers on her way to the 6-1 opening set victory.

The second set looked awfully similar to the first, as she raced out to a 4-0 lead, and broke the South African’s serve one more time to finish off the second-round match 6-1, 6-1.

“It’s tough for me as I’m always the favorite,” said a confident Williams after the match. “It’s been this way for quite a few years so it’s a pressure that I’ve learned to deal with and I like it that way.”

The top-seeded American smashed eight aces and returned 26 winners over the course of the match, while Scheepers hit only five winners.

Serena will now move on and face 25th seeded Alize Cornet of France, who took down German Petra Cetkovska 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Thursday. The American has lost just five sets so far at Wimbledon, and will look to continue her dominant play in England.

“I’ve been coming here for over a decade and the crowd is always great and it’s so great to see all my fans here,” said Williams. “I love it.”
