Eugenie Bouchard Enters Quarterfinals at Wimbledon

Eugenie Bouchard earned herself a spot in the quarterfinals Monday, defeating 25th seed Alize Cornet 7-6(5), 7-5. After taking the first set in a tiebreaker she fell behind 5-3 in the second set, but stormed back to win the final four games and wrap up the match.

Cornet, who beat top-seed Serena Williams on Saturday, was unable to handle the aggressiveness of the young Bouchard, who is seeking to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon after doing so in the Australian and French Opens already this year.

“This is what I’ve worked so hard for, to be in the quarters at Wimbledon,” said Bouchard. “But I want to go another step. I want to keep going.”

In the quarterfinals she will meet either Maria Sharapova or Angelique Kerber, who are set to face off later Monday.

The quarterfinals will be without two of the world’s top players, however, Ana Ivanovic and Agnieska Radwanska were both sent home on Monday as each lost their respective match.

Ivanovic fell to 19th seeded Sabine Lisicki in the resumption of a third-round match that was suspended due to rain. The German Lisicki smashed seven aces and hit 40 winners on her way to the 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory. In contrast, Ivanovic had 20 unforced errors to go along with just 24 winners, leading to her early exit.

Lisicki will take on Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova for a chance to reach the quarterfinals.

Fourth-seeded Radwanska fell to Russian Ekaterina Makarova 3-6, 0-6 in disappointing fashion as Makarova moved into the quarterfinals. Makarova wrapped the match up in just 53 minutes, putting on a fantastic performance that saw her commit just six unforced errors while Radwanska had 14. Makarova will meet 23rd seed Lucie Safarova in the quarterfinals.
