Stan Wawrinka became the first player to enter the quarterfinals of the Western and Southern Open on Thursday, battling back from a set down to oust Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 in Cincinatti. The Australian Open champion reeled off 12 of the final 13 games to storm into the quarterfinals.
Cilic looked to be in control early on, picking up a break point and rolling to a first set victory in just 24 minutes. Wawrinka than earned himself a triple break in the second set, holding Cilic to a goose egg and capturing the second set 6-0.
After snatching a break in the third game of the final set, Wawrinka notched break points and rattled off the final five games to push into the final eight of the tournament.
The Swiss now moves on and will face Julien Benneteau of France, after Benneteau knocked off Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz. Benneteau is 2-1 all-time against Wawrinka.
