Girls High School Recap: Port Washington Edges Jericho; Sayville Dominates Copiague

Tuesday afternoon played host to a bunch of different girls tennis matches throughout Long Island as we inch closer to the season’s conclusion. Port Washington hosted Jericho in a Conference I showdown and edged the Jayhawks 4-3. At first singles, Sarah Seeman continued her success with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Shanice Arthur. Seeman has now won her last five matches at first singles.
The deciding bout came at third doubles as Emily DeRayna and eighth-grader Brittany Polevikov pulled off a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 win. Polevikov is one of many of the young players who have stepped up this year for a Port Washington team that lost seven players to graduation a year ago.
Over in Suffolk County, the Sayville Golden Flashes notched a key victory over Copiague, blowing past the Eagles 7-0. The win keeps Sayville afloat in Suffolk’s League III, improving its record to 7-3 overall and keeping pace with Islip at the top of the league’s standings.
Miller Place snapped a five-match losing streak and notched its first win of the season as it edged Southampton 4-3, and the Commack Cougars outlasted Half Hollow Hills West 4-3 to stay within striking distance of Hills East atop League 1.
