2010 French Open Quarterfinals Set

Top-seeded Serena Williams defeated the 18th seed Shahar Peer by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to move into the women’s quarterfinals of the 2010 French Open. Serena took only 67 min. to take out Peer, and Serena is the only American singles player, on the men’s or women’s side, still alive at Roland Garros. In other action, Samantha Stosur ended Justine Henin’s 24-match winning streak at the French Open by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Stosur was a semifinalist at the 2009 French Open.

Number four seed Jelena Jankovic also advanced in Monday’s action by defeating 23rd-ranked Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-2. Jankovic is looking to advance to the semifinals in 2010, just as she did at both the 2007 and 2008 French Opens. 

Jankovic’s quarterfinal opponent will be 23-year-old Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, who defeated Jarmila Groth, 6-4, 6-3. Jankovic and Shvedova last played in the 2009 U.S. Open, as Shvedova upset Jankovic in three sets.

On the women’s side, the quarterfinal matchups as as follows:

In men’s French Open action, number two seed Rafael Nadal will return to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros as he defeated the 24-seed, Thomaz Bellucci, in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Nadal will face fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, the 19th seed, who defeated Fernando Verdasco, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The last chance on the men’s side for the United States was ousted Monday as 98th-ranked Robby Ginepri fell to the number three seed, Serbian Novak Djokovic, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Russian qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili fell to the number 22 seed, Austrian Jurgen Melzer, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Gabashvili was still riding high after his major upset against Andy Roddick.
