2013 Australian Open Recap: Day Five

Weather for Day Five of the 2013 Australian Open was cloudy with a high of 72. Day Five’s Day Session saw a total of 43,904 attendees, while the Night Session saw 26,522 for a grand total of 70,426.

On the men’s side, winners included the top-seeded Novak Djokovic, number four David Ferrer, number five Tomas Berdych, number eight Janko Tipsarevic, the 10th-seeded Nicholas Almagro, 15th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, 16th-seeded  Kei Nishikori. On the Women’s Singles side of the draw, advancing were second-seeded Maria Sharapova, fourth-seeded Agnieskza Radwanska, the fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber, sixth-seeded Li Na, 13th-seeded Ana Ivanovic, 18th-seeded Julia Goerges and 19th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova.

The men’s singles no longer in contention include: the 20th-seeded Sam Querrey, number 22 Fernando Verdasco, 24th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz, 26th-seeded Jurgen Melzer, number 28 Marcos Baghdatis, 31st-seeded Radek Stepanek, 32nd-seeded Julien Benneteau. Women’s singles who were eliminated from contention on Day Four include the 11th-seeded Marion Bartoli, 22nd-seeded  Jelena Jankovic, 25th-seeded Venus Williams and 27th-seeded Sorana Cirstea.

The stat of the day belongs to Maria Shapaova, who has conceded only four games en route to the fourth round, the fewest since Steffi Graf in 1989.

Set for action on Day Six of the event are the second-seeded Roger Federer as he takes on Bernard Tomic and the number three seeded Andy Murray as he faces qualifier Ricardas Berankis. And on the women’s side of the draw, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka faces Jamie Hampton, while the third-seeded Serena Williams faces Ayumi Morita.
