2013 Australian Open Recap: Day Four

Day Four of action at the 2013 Australian Open saw extremely hot temperatures in Melbourne Park. Seeded players certainly took to the courts looking to get back off the courts as soon as possible to preserve their energy and body for future matches. Some players were able to accomplish this feat, as on the men’s side, Roger Federer, Juan Martin DelPotro and Andy Murray were a few who advanced in straight sets. Two seeded men lost on Day Four, Jeremy Chardy of France defeated the 30th-seeded Marcel Granollers, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Florian Mayer, the 25th seed, fell 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 to Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania. Local favorite Bernard Tomic won in four sets and will now take on Roger Federer in the third round in a much anticipated match Down Under.

Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki all won in straight sets in their second round matches. American Sloane Stephens also make quick work of her opponent, Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-4, 6-3 while advancing to the third round. Four seeded women fell on Day Four, as Petra Kvitova, the number eight seed, was upset by Laura Robson of Great Britain, and the 17th-seeded Lucie Safarova, 21st-seeded Varvara Lepchenko and 26 seed Hsieh Su-Wei also were all eliminated.
