2013 U.S. Open Preview: Day Six
Action begins on Saturday, Day Six at the 2013 U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 11:00 a.m., as three former U.S. Open champs, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Svetlana Kuznetsova headline play. Partly sunny skies with temps in the mid-upper 70s are forecast throughout the day, until late afternoon when isolated thunderstorms threaten to wash out the late afternoon and evening action.
Things kick off at 11:00 a.m. EST on Arthur Ashe Stadium, as American hopeful Christina McHale continues her run against the number 13 women’s seed, Ana Ivanovic. The Teaneck, N.J. native McHale will have a ton of fan support from the locals, but it remains to be seen if that will be enough to get her through this encounter with the experienced Ivanovic, who holds 11 career titles, including the 2008 French Open crown. Immediately following, the number two seeded Rafael Nadal will take the Ashe court to face Croatian Ivan Dodig. Dodig knocked off the number 27 seed Fernando Verdasco in round one, and is 1-1 lifetime against Nadal. Under the lights tonight at Ashe, the number six seeded Caroline Wozniacki continues her mini-comeback on the winning trail against Italy’s Camila Giorgi, and Roger Federer caps off the day’s action at Ashe when he faces French upstart Adrian Mannarino.
At Louis Armstrong, a pair of seeded players will vie for a spot in the final Round of 16 as the 14th-seeded Maria Kirilenko meets the 21 seed, Simona Halep of Romania. Then, its number two seed Victoria Azarenka’s turn to gain entry into the final Round of 16, as she meets the 26th-seeded Alize Cornet of France. American John Isner, the 13 seed, follows and will surely have the backing of the Armstrong crowd as he faces the 22nd-seeded German, Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Beginning at 11:00 a.m. EST on Grandstand, it will be Mikhail Kukushkin taking on the number four seed, Spain’s David Ferrer, followed by the unseeded American Jack Sock taking on the 18 seed, Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic. Sock eliminated Maximo Gonzalez in four sets, as he seeks to move deeper into the men’s draw against the more experienced Tipsarevic.
