Owen Kassimir has been named the Long Island High School Coach of the Year by Long Island Tennis Magazine.

The Friends Academy head coach guided the Quakers to both the Nassau County Small School Championship and the Long Island Small School Championship this past spring.

By winning the LI title, Friends Academy was one of four teams who qualified for the New York State Team Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where it would reach the state finals.

“It was quite a ride this year for Friends Academy Boys’ Tennis,” said Kassimir. “The boys are all champions in my mind. Finishing second in the state for Small Schools is an amazing accomplishment and everyone should be proud of that. We are a team, and we couldn’t have accomplished what we did as individuals. Everyone on the team was focused throughout the season and played to the best of their abilities each and every day. I’m so proud of everyone on the team for staying so close as friends, family and team. It showed in their play, and they all stayed focused on our team goals.”

In his short time as head coach of both the boys and girls teams at Friends Academy, Kassimir has helped establish a winning culture that he and the team expects to continue as they move forward.

“Winning Coach of the Year from Long Island Tennis Magazine just tops off an amazing season. Thank you for this honor and distinction. I’m looking forward to another fantastic season in 2024.”
