On Thursday evening at the U.S. Open, the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium was treated to an exhibition doubles match between John McEnroe & Adam Sandler against Jim Courier & Kevin James prior to the Novak Djokovic-Juan Martin del Potro men’s quarterfinals match. The comedians showed off consistent play, cracking jokes and the occasional entertaining shot, including one when James attempted a shot between the legs, running head-first into the back wall. Comedian Colin Quinn served as chair umpire.
On match point (the match was first to reach three games) with Sandler and McEnroe ahead 2-1, Courier broke up a rally by running over to the other side of the net, trading places with McEnroe, while James and Sandler kept the point going. Then, Courier switched again while James ran over to team with Sandler. When McEnroe and Courier won the last point, both teams looked toward Quinn asking which team won the point, which was given to Sandler & McEnroe to end the exhibition.
