American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, along with her partner, Romanian Horia Tecau, won the 2012 Australian Mixed-Doubles championship, defeating Russian Elena Vesnina & India’s Leander Paes, 6-3, 5-7, 10-3. This marked the first Grand Slam victory for the 26-year-old Mattek-Sands, originally from Minneapolis, Minn. who now makes her home in Phoenix, Ariz..

This would also be Tecau’s first claimed Grand Slam title as well. He had lost in the last two Wimbledon men’s doubles finals. Paes, a 38-year-old doubles player from India, played in his second championship match after he had won the men’s doubles tournament alongside his partner, Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, a day earlier.
