American teenager Taylor Fritz continued his meteoric rise with a routine 6-4, 6-2 victory over Italy’s Simone Bolelli on Wednesday to reach the second round of the Miami Open.

Fritz got things going early, putting together some excellent baseline play to secure a break point in the opening game. It was all he needed in the opener as both players would hold serve throughout the rest of the set resulting in a 6-4 Fritz triumph.

The second set would remain on serve through the first four games until Fritz’s baseline play allowed him to secure the key break to take a 3-2 lead. After holding serve, Fritz would pick up one more break point to put the match out of reach.

The American did not face a break point in the second set as he went on to win in straight sets. He will take on eighth-seed David Ferrer.

Joining Fritz in the second round is fellow American Rajeev Ram who defeated Evgeny Donskoy 7-5, 7-6(7) on Wednesday.

On the women’s side, Americans Christina McHale, Coco Vandeweghe and Irina Falconi all notched victories to advance to the second round.

Vandeweghe ousted fellow American Samantha Crawford 6-4, 7-5. She will take on sixth-seed Carla Suarez-Navarro next. Falconi cruised past Italy’s Francesca Schiavone 7-5, 6-1 and will play eighth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova next.

McHale was pushed to the brink by Japan’s Misaki Doi, but McHale held on for the 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 triumph, setting up a second round contest with world number one Serena Williams.
