In action on the men’s side of the draw at the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open, U.S. wild card entry Ryan Harrison defeated Italy’s Potito Starace 6-7(6/8), 6-4, 6-4 to advance to face Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who has won his past three tournaments in a row including last week’s BNP Paribas Open title at Indian Wells, Calif.

“I’ve had my fair share of chances [against top 10 ranked players],” Harrison said. “I’m hoping this is the year where I’m not just competitive. I’m going out to win these matches. He [Federer] is obviously an outstanding player. That’s an understatement. He’s done incredible stuff with the game. And, in my opinion, he’s the greatest player to play this game.”

Also advancing was Marcus Baghdatis of Cyprus with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer. Awaiting Baghdatis is world number one-ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia, winner of the past three Grand Slam crowns.

Another American moving on at the event is Sam Querrey, a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 victor over Australia’s Matthew Ebden. Querrey will next face South African Kevin Anderson.

The news was not so bright for a duo of Americans, Donald Young and Jesse Levine, as Young was denied a trip the second round with a 5-7, 4-6 loss to David Goffin of Belgium, and Levine was ousted by Russian Igor Kunitsyn, 7-6(8), 7-6(3).
